(2009-2013)
Background
CCCEA initiated a project for the post-earthquake reconstruction of the “5.12 Sichuan Earthquake” in October 2008. It organized the “Post-earthquake Reconstruction Research Tour” for 23 local secondary school principals and teachers to visit the earth stricken areas. A fundraising event “We’ll Never Forget” was organized to arouse students, teachers, and the public’s awareness of the aftermath and the post-earthquake reconstruction in Sichuan.
Besides technical support, CCCEA believes in the importance of training English teachers to replace those unfortunate ones lost in the earthquake. Against this background, the “Sichuan English Teacher Professional Development Program” was developed in collaboration with York Region District School Board in 2009. This program had proven to be very successful training over 3,000 local English teachers in Sichuan. The goal was to nurture English teachers in disaster affected areas with Canadian teaching methodologies, in order to assist their long-term development on English education.

York Region District School Board
York Region District School Board (YRDSB) is the third largest government-funded school board under Ontario Ministry of Education. YRDSB is consistently chosen to be a top ranking school board in the Ontario Province. Every year, teacher mentors are screened to participate in the English Teacher Professional Development Program. The selected mentors are ESL professionals, who possess more than 10-year experience in teaching non-native English learners. They also train new teachers in Canada.
